Entry into motorsport can be an intimidating prospect. I have written this blog to help you make the leap into competitive circuit racing as easy and painless as possible. My motivation to get behind my laptop was generated last year, through the 2025 track day season. Catching up with past and current clients over lunch and in the pits, I had conversations with 6 clients centreing around a recuring theme - what to race and who to hire from?
It’s a common pathway - getting started by participating in track days with all the fun and enjoyment they bring, to wanting a little more from your circuit experience.
If you are ready to take the leap, let me help you with a solid recommendation - who to hire from and what series/championship to choose to get you on the grid.
I wrote my “How to Start Racing Guide” to give new racers the inside view of the racing landscape. The emphasis is on making good decisions and optimising every pound spent. This all in a bid to move you up the grid in the most enjoyable and cost-effective way. You can purchase my guide from Amazon here. It’s a great place to start with all profits given to Mission Motorsport. Look them up - they are a charity we feel deserves our support.
I have been racing in the Citroen C1 series for several years now. What keeps me coming back? It is simply great fun! 3-hour endurance races with the challenge of large and highly competitive grids. Pit stops, driver changes and refuelling all add to the excitement.
When asked “what do I race?”, the enquiry is met with an animated smile and in-depth conversation on the challenges of extracting quick and consistent laps out of 75 horsepower. Silverstone’s Copse corner is flat in 4th gear at 90 MPH. Add a grid full of C1’s and it is simply brilliant fun.
The serious side to this conversation is a low powered race car has to be driven with precision and accuracy to extract a competitive lap. Maximising minimum speeds, driving with finesse and the intent to maintain optimum momentum become the primary objective for every lap.
Once you have mastered the skills to drive a C1, or for that matter any low powered car competitively against your peers, you have the foundation skills to drive whatever you choose. The series has found interest with BTCC drivers past and present - Jake Hill, Tom Ingram, Josh Cook and Jade Edwards to name a few. You are in good company!
Yes, I know they are not the coolest cars to begin your racing career in, but once you are in, that thought for me just evaporated away. I joke with my son who I race with when we see a C1 on the road - we both think “RACE CAR”. Who’d have thought!
Finding a trustworthy professional racing team to hire a car from, or look after yours, requires research. There are plenty out there - remember to purchase my “How to Start Racing Guide” as I give you lots of helpful tips to aid your research.

We joined owner Richard Barnard and his team for the 2025 season and will be working together once again in 2026. Just for the record ‘I’m not on commission! I just like to spread the word when I find good people.
Richard will hire you a fully prepared C1 to race with full professional mechanical support. Throughout the weekend a dedicated team looks after you, including, if you are new to racing, mentoring, coaching and guidance, from an experienced racing driver.
C1 racing is an endurance race series with up to 4 drivers sharing the one vehicle over a race weekend. When starting out this can be a comfort - you may well be working with a driving partner in the same situation as yourself. Typically, 2 drivers sharing is a good ratio. This gives 3 hours of racing shared, plus qualifying of approximately 50 minutes.

My race weekends include testing, often on the Thursday or Friday before the race weekend, giving us plenty of time to dial in and become comfortable with both circuit and car. Richard also provides testing and track day hire and support and will pair drivers together, so you don’t have to find your own team mate if your solo.
Pre-race testing is a valuable way to familiarise yourself with the team, circuit and car. Richard brings an articulated truck with a driver’s rest area - this doubles up as a briefing room, providing light refreshments and sandwiches over the weekend. We are looked after well.
If you are working through CAT’s Race Academy Programme we will work with you and Richard’s team to organise your first test session and race weekend. A seamless and professional start to your racing career.
The RABsport team engineered our car for last year’s Race of Remembrance at Anglesey in November. I shared the driving duties with son Mark and racing driver Jake Hill - BTCC Champion 2024. The teams race strategy took us to 2nd in class, 4 seconds behind the winning C1 after 12 hours of racing.
Race strategy from Troy and Ben was exceptional - these guys look after cars and drivers In top flight motorsport, so come with a multitude of endurance racing talents. I’ll let Richard tell you more.
“We have raced as a team since 2019, and as a professional team since 2023. With Team owners Richard’s background in LMP and GT racing at the top level including WEC, Le Mans series and GT World Challenge amongst other series, we aim to provide a top-level package for those looking to take their first steps into motorsport. Alongside the C1 endurance series we have cars competing in the prestigious Ginetta Junior championship and aim to expand to offer an entry level GT option in both the UK and Europe with the Ginetta GT Academy and Creventec 24hr series in the near future.

With wins and podiums finishes end experience in multiple races from C1 to Britcar, we are growing and building to offer the best platform for you to begin, grow and succeed.
CATDT have put their trust in us to help them find their elusive race win in the C1 series , and in our first year we very nearly succeeded! Thank you to Colin, Mark and Jo for joining us on this journey, a tremendous team to race alongside and great people.”

Pricing for a 3-hour race shared with 2 drivers is £2997.50 per driver plus VAT. Just bring your race gear and we provide the rest.
CAT provides a 6-day race academy programme for those new to racing. For experienced racing drivers, individual days can be selected from the full academy listing to develop specific skills and techniques. Our Over Grip Limit course Race Level 3 is a good example. This course is popular with those drivers looking to win confidence at the limit of adhesion and beyond.
If you have worked through our Track Day Academy, we provide crossover courses to amalgamate the learning from track day to race day.
Working with Richard and the RABsport team has given me the opportunity to enhance our Race Academy Programme with a proven professional and cohesive route into motorsport, vehicle hire and preparation - a win for all.
Regards
Colin
