Senna

Senna is the true story of Brazilian motor-racing legend, Ayrton Senna, whom many believe was the greatest driver who ever lived. Spanning Senna’s titanic Formula One career, the film charts his physical and spiritual journey, both on track and off; his quest for perfection and his ultimate transformation from a supremely gifted novice, who exploded into F1 in 1984, to myth after the tragic events of Imola in 1994. Made with the full co-operation of the Senna family and Formula One Management, Senna is the first official documentary feature about his life, featuring astounding archive material, much of which is previously unseen.

Aryton Senna: The Official Tribute

Interviews with Senna and his family make captivating viewing. Lots of heart felt tributes and anecdotes from drivers, friends and associates from the Senna era. Watch the lap of Senna at work in a Honda NSX around Suzuka. Fantastic! Senna talks of his ability to mentally recount a lap and see himself driving the circuit as if outside the car. It is fascinating to listen to his account of his amazing ability, career and spiritual beliefs. An official tribute with proceeds from sales going to support the Senna foundation.

Nine Days In Summer

The definitive story of the development of the Lotus 49 and record-breaking DFV engine. Lots of full-colour racing action, with brilliant footage of the “Ring” and Snetterton. This film really captures the excitement and danger of F1 racing in the 60’s, with lots of detail footage of the cars and drivers. Keith Duckworth and Colin Chapman feature throughout, with fascinating footage following the development of both car and engine.

Nissan Skyline GT-R

This DVD has been around for some time but still makes interesting viewing. It is the laps of the “Ring” in a 700BHP GTR with Dirk Schoysman that really “light my fire”. If you are considering a trip to the Nordschleife and haven’t been before, this is the DVD you need to watch. Dirk’s laps are as expected. Inch perfect and form a very useful visual reference for new “Ringers”.

In-Car 956 Porsche Experience

It’s 1983, Derek Bell climbs into his 956 Rothmans Porsche for a demonstration lap, prior to the last 1000km race to be held at the Nordschleife. The lap is spellbinding. Work your way through Le Mans, topping 250MPH along the original chicane-less Mulsanne Straight, Brands Hatch, Silverstone, Spa and more. I used the “Ring” lap as a reference before my training with Dirk Schoysman. I watched this DVD 100’s of times to get an idea of the circuit layout. Nissan sent me for the training in preparation for evaluation driving on the “Ring”.

Best Motoring: Drift Bible

I had this DVD given to me as a present. It covers the key areas concerned with drifting and offers interesting insights into the different techniques needed to drift differing platforms. It is well presented and offers good advice. As with all tutorial information you need to take time out to study the detail. I have watched this DVD several times and always seem to pick out a point I hadn’t seen before. There is lots of information that also relates to over grip limit driving and car control – but you have to look for it. Keiichi Tsuchiya is, without doubt, a “Drifting God”.

Jackie Stewart - Triple Formula 1 World Champion

Jackie Stewart has always been a motor racing hero of mine. This DVD captures his life in all its glory. A good mix of interviews, racing footage and historical information. I always find racing footage of the 60’s and 70’s sobering. They drove on a knife edge – one mistake and they lost their lives. Detailed footage of the cars, highlights the drivers vulnerability when compared with their modern counterparts. A true celebration of a sporting hero – one of my favourite DVDs.

CAR MOVIES …

If you are my age (50) you have probably already discovered these iconic films, but if you are new to performance driving, you could be missing out! They won’t help your driving technique, but for the car enthusiast, they are great entertainment.

Le Mans

This film's legacy lives on today. Phrases and images can be found on posters, birthday cards, T-shirts and luggage. Tag Heuer even designed a commemorative watch to celebrate Steve McQueen’s iconic cinematography. The plot is a little thin and reviews at the film's premiere were poor, but who cares!! The film is a piece of motoring history and employed over 40 professional racing drivers. One of the drivers, David Piper lost his left leg in an accident while filming. In 1970 Steve McQueen is quoted to have said “It was a blood bath that picture. It was the most dangerous thing I’d ever done and I’m lucky to be alive”. With that level of personal dedication and commitment to the world of motor racing, it must be worth watching.

Grand Prix

They could never repeat this film again. The director John Frankenheimer used timed slots on Grand Prix race days to capture the atmosphere, filming dummy starts with his actors alongside the Grand Prix stars of the day. Amazing dynamic sequences on the Monza banking and just enough of a storyline to keep you interested, between the excellent in and on-car footage.

Bullitt

Another Steve McQueen masterpiece, it has an engaging strong storyline. But if I am honest, it is the car chase that everybody remembers the film for. The soundtrack and special effects look a little dated now, but I still think the car chase is one of the best.

The Italian Job

Car enthusiast beware. There is enough butchery of exotic machinery to make you weep: an Aston; a Muira; and several E types all meet a destructive end – along with several Mini Coopers. It’s been around for sooooo long, but if you haven’t seen it, you're missing out.
