A mild and dry spring may have contributed to a busy start to the year for us here at CAT, it’s been full of activity for the whole CAT Team. I’m wondering if the car covers were off early this year due to the weather, such is the demand for our courses in the first and second quarters. Despite being so busy Jo and I managed to find the time to enjoy a driving holiday in Scotland - Bedford to the Isle of Skye. An opportunity to enjoy the amazing scenery that Scotland has to offer, along with many miles of driving quite possibly, the best A Roads in the UK. I even managed to find the time to repair a leaking head gasket on a very pretty Austin A30, owned by our Host! Yes really - more on that later.

Paul Millbank, our senior instructor, after having experienced health issues last year has made the difficult decision to retire from his position. Paul’s highly effective coaching style, engineering knowledge and passion for anything with 4 wheels, especially Alfa’s, has meant Paul has touched many, many of your lives over the 17 years spent as a key member of the CAT Team.
It’s no surprise therefore, so many of you have been enquiring about his recovery. I thought Paul should tell you in his own words.
"After 17 unforgettable years of road, track, and proving ground instruction, I find myself at a crossroads. One that has led me to make the bittersweet decision to step away from my role at CAT Driver Training. This decision did not come lightly, as the work I’ve done and the connections I’ve forged have shaped my life in ways I could never have anticipated. Allow me to share the reasons behind this change.
The decision to leave CAT Driver Training stems largely from my health journey over the past year. Facing a serious illness has been both challenging and enlightening, forcing me to reassess my priorities and make choices that honour my well-being. While I have always been passionate about teaching, mentoring, and fostering safe, logical driving principles, I realised that continuing in this demanding role was no longer sustainable for me. Stepping away allows me to focus on my long-term physical and mental recovery. Also, in doing so, it allows the ongoing excellence of Colin, Jo and the dedicated CAT Driver Training team to carry the torch forward. For me, this is not just a matter of stepping back from a job; it is about recognising the importance of self-care and embracing the necessary changes to live a balanced life through my retirement.
As I bid farewell to my role at CAT Driver Training, I want to express my deepest gratitude to all of the clients, colleagues and supporters. Your encouragement and trust have been the cornerstone of my work and a constant source of inspiration.
With heartfelt gratitude
Paul Millbank - Senior Instructor (retired!)"
In development throughout 2024, we publicly launched our ADAS course in April 2025. Already receiving excellent feedback via our Trustpilot independent reviews. We are confident this unique safety led course is fulfilling the needs and demands of ADAS developers.
The ADAS driver training course is designed for all drivers who test & evaluate Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in controlled environments & proving grounds. Its focus is risk reduction, precision driving & safety critical recovery, supporting validation testing & mitigating real world driving risk.
Built to address the ever-increasing variability & risk increasing nature of this specialist field of ADAS testing, when progressing from laboratory & simulation to proving ground & real world, engineers, proving ground & software developers will be prepared for predictable recovery from premeditated or unexpected failures with confidence.
The CAT instructors recently took a break from their daily training and coaching schedule to spend 2 days in front of the camera, creating content for our social media and website.
Being in front of a camera lens doesn’t come naturally to me. It never ceases to surprise me how subjects I recite every day verbatim, seem to enter an irretrievable void of emptiness when speaking into a microphone.
Once Steve, Helen and of course me, had fumbled our way through countless umms, ahhhhs and many half-finished sentences along with endless long pauses, we settled into what turned out to be, a very enjoyable and often funny day.
You will be the judge of how successful our performances were - look out for new informative and engaging content over the coming months.
For more information and availability please contact Jo or Lynne and thank you to Matt at Storm Videos for his patience and creativity.
Suzy at Driven Life, is trialling a lady’s day on circuit like no other. A track day devoted exclusively to women participants. Are you interested? Or do you know someone who might be?
I met Suzy for her first training session with me here at UTAC Millbrook in the main car park - it was pouring down with rain and windy, but there was Suzy changing her wheels from track day tyres to road tyres for our session together. That was many years ago. Since our first meeting, Suzy has written a piece on CAT for Speed Hunters - she is a professional journalist - accompanied me on several trips to the Nürburgring with a group of her friends and, has continued accruing many laps to continue perfecting her technique and knowledge.
A regular attendee of track days, currently the owner of a track prepared Evo 5 and 700 BHP Audi RS6, Suzy’s CV is significantly longer than what I have enlightened you with here, but I’m sure you get the idea. You are in trusted and experienced hands.
Suzy explains what the day is all about:
"On 22nd August 2025, Driven Life will be running a unique, women-only trackday at Blyton Park. As far as we know, this is the only one of its kind in the UK (this year at least) and so it offers a unique opportunity to provide a supportive, low-pressure environment for female car enthusiasts to enjoy their car on track, whether they’re a seasoned track pro or it’s their first time driving on a circuit. A female instructor will be on hand during the day to give any guidance, and our track photographer (a woman, of course!) will provide free pics from the day.
It would be the perfect opportunity for any women out there who have always wanted to give it a go but have never had the courage to try - maybe that’s your wife/sister/daughter/friend who’s always tagged along with you on car days, or maybe that’s you? If you’d like to know more, please check out the website (www.drivenlife.co.uk) for more details - or if you’re wondering why someone would even attempt to risk bankruptcy by doing this, then please have a read of my blog".

Customers often look quizzically at me, when I tell them I race a 75 horsepower Citroen C1. Sometimes it’s a challenge to convey just how exciting it is. So here is a link to help me, it captures a moment that is typical for a C1 race, busy, often frenetic and simply great fun.
While I’m talking C1 racing, CAT is supporting Sunbelt Rentals with the build of a new race Citroen C1 for the 12 hour Race of Remembrance, taking place in November this year at the Anglesey racing circuit. Car number 545 has been commissioned and fully sponsored by Sunbelt Rentals. Prior to the race weekend of 7th to 9th November 2025, once shaken down and tested #545 will be used for fund raising and promotion of the event. Sunbelt Rentals is generously supporting Mission Motorsport with a significant charitable donation.
If you would like to make a charitable donation, adding your company name to the list of sponsors represented on the car, please contact Colin via info@catdrivertraining.co.uk for more details. You will be able to watch the race on the BRSCC live stream, I will include a link in our Autumn newsletter for you to follow.
We have begun the process of upgrading the CAT fleet to represent the vehicles required for our automotive industry clients. Occasionally our Road, Track and Race clients may also choose to hire a vehicle from us for their training. It is inevitable that we move on to Electric and Hybrid platforms to satisfy our client’s needs - to complement our GR 86 please welcome our newest addition - the Toyota Corolla GR Hybrid.
Through the Winter, CAT instructor Helen successfully completed the CAT instructor skid car training course. Helen is now fully signed off to deliver skid car training courses to both our motor industry and road clients here at UTAC Millbrook. Well done, Helen.
After 20 years as an Advanced driving coach CAT instructor Steve continues to be motivated to develop his driving knowledge and technique. In the last 2 years he has become a Diamond Elite Advanced Test holder and also become one of their Elite Examiner Testers. A particular highlight has also been achieving the IAM RoadSmart Master Driver with Distinction and zero faults.
The CAT Team do not sit on their laurels - we continue to develop our own skills, guaranteeing the content of each course is current and relevant.
Yes, let me tell you more about that Austin A30. Imagine my delight as a fellow Austin owner as we pulled into the driveway of our rented Isle of Skye cottage, to see the rear view of a pretty blue Austin A30, nestled in a garage with the door open. Martin the owner of the cottage, pointed out to me he was endeavouring to fix a leaking head gasket on the Austin, ready for a trip with his grandson to the annual Austin A30/35 club get together in Stoke on Trent, but was unsure how to finish the job he had started.
What better way to spend your holiday than to give a helping hand to a fellow Austin owner and car enthusiast!!!!! It took the 2 of us around 6 hours over three days to get the little Austin up and running and ready for its inaugural trip.
Cylinder head refitted with a new gasket, retimed ignition and a forage into the carburettor to clean the jets and the job was completed.
So, when customers ask me if I’m a car enthusiast, I always answer yes, a passionate one. It’s moments like my holiday experience that help me realise that cars have been the main focus and interest of my life since my early teens. My car passion has allowed me to create and build friendships and relationships that have guided me through life.
I have shared the pleasure of a strangers company many miles from home, all based on a shared passion for the motor car. Reflecting on the conversations I have with you, our clients, my life experiences are not unique.
This is a poignant moment for me to say a big THANK YOU to my friend and colleague, Paul Millbank, as he leaves us for retirement. Thank you Paul. I have experienced some of my strongest life memories with you side by side at CAT. Enjoy your retirement. You will be missed.
Enjoy your driving and enjoy the summer
Regards
Colin
